DIY Lip Balm

June 12, 2014 Leave a Comment

One of my favorite hobbies is making beauty products.  I dream about going into business one day, but for now, it is just something that I enjoy doing.  I make products for myself and my daughter, and love giving them out to family and friends.

People often ask me why I started creating products.  Basically, I couldn’t find any lip balms that I liked, so I decided to make my own.  I had most of the ingredients in my pantry, and it was so easy!  Also, I absolutely loved my lip balm.  From there, I started experimenting with different products, and presently make salt scrub, face lotion, body butter, body scrubbers, baby cream and various types of salves.

The other reason behind my creation of products is that I like knowing what I am putting onto my body.  Skin is the biggest organ in the body, and many beauty products today are full of chemicals.  When I look at lotion bottles, I can rarely identify the ingredients.  However, when I make my own products, I know what I am using on my body.  Certain oils and butters are so amazing for our skin, and I like incorporating these ingredients into my products.

My lip balm recipe is easy.  Here it is, if you want to give it a try!

Becky’s Simple Lip Balm:

1 tbsp. carrier oil (i.e. coconut, jojoba, almond)

1 tbsp.  beeswax

1 tbsp. cocoa butter

4-6 drops of essential oil (i.e. lavendar, peppermint, sweet orange)

1-2 drops of vitamin E

Combine oils, butter and beeswax in a double boiler over low heat.  Remove from heat and stir in essential oils and vitamin E.  Pour into tins and let them cool before you cap them.

I use only the highest quality ingredients, and buy organic when I can.  I purchase my carrier oils and butters from Mountain Rose Herbs, and  I use Young Living essential oils.  I am hoping to start buying beeswax from a local beekeeper.

Creating your own products is a great way to make sure that you are taking great care of your skin, and its fun.  Give the lip balm a try, and enjoy!
