dry skin brushing

April 7, 2014 Leave a Comment

My friend Windy emailed me last week, asking whether I knew about dry skin brushing.  I love dry skin brushing! I used to do it pretty consistently, but the brush that I use has been sitting on the shelf in my bathroom without being used for some time, so I was grateful for the reminder.  I plan to go back to using it every day.

Dry skin brushing it awesome.  It is one of those easy, cheap things that anyone can do to improve their health.  Basically, you buy a dry skin brush, and you use it to brush your dry skin.  It’s kind of like using a loofah, just not in the shower.  Pretty uncomplicated.  Skin is the largest organ in the body, and dry brushing is a great way to pamper it!

The benefits of dry skin brushing are many.  The most obvious benefit is that it gently exfoliates, by removing dead skin cells and promoting the growth of new skin.  This promotes smooth, glowing skin.  Dry brushing also opens up your pores.

Dry skin brushing moves lymph fluid into the lymph nodes, which promotes waste elimination and detoxification.

Further, it has also been found to increase blood flow and circulation.  When I broke my foot last October, I used the dry brush religiously on my injured foot and leg, to promote blood flow and healing.  There is some indication that this increase in circulation could possibly reduce cellulite.

As for the method of dry brushing, there are suggestions that can be found online.  Some websites have detailed instructions about how to dry brush each area of the body, while others simply suggest brushing towards the heart to promote lymphatic detoxification.  When I brush, this is typically the method that I follow.  I start at my feet and brush towards my heart.

If possible, try to use the dry brush before your morning shower, and be sure to moisturize afterwards!  Otherwise, any time of day is fine for this easy routine.

You can buy a dry skin brush online, at any health shop or drugstore.  I got mine on amazon.  Look for a brush with firm, natural bristles.  If you get a brush with a long handle, it will be easier for those hard to reach spots on your back.

Dry brushing is a great way to get your skin glowing, and promote detoxification and increased circulation.  Happy brushing!
