DIY Oatmeal Bath Powder and Giveaway!

February 24, 2015 27 Comments

One of my all time favorite DIY beauty items is a simple lavender oatmeal bath powder, presented in a mason jar. The instructions to the recipient are simple: scoop out a few spoonfuls of the mixture into a warm bath and soak.  This is a simple gift and perfect for the dead of winter when most people are dealing with dry, flaky skin.

Oatmeal is excellent for skin. It has anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.  The skin-soothing characteristics of oatmeal have been known for many years, and the FDA actually cites it as effective for relieving dryness and inflammation, including stings, rashes, and eczema.  Because of its texture, oatmeal is also an excellent exfoliant.

If you decide to use oatmeal as a beauty product, make sure to use real oats rather than instant oatmeal, which likely has added sugar and flavors.  The best form of oatmeal for the skin is finely powdered oatmeal (sometimes known as colloidal oatmeal.)  When the oats are ground into fine particles, more of their benefits are released and this form of oatmeal easily binds to the skin to provide protection.

You can buy colloidal oatmeal or make it in the blender, which is what I do.  Simply pour some oatmeal into the blender and grind until the oats are fine particles.

DIY Lavender Oatmeal Bath Powder

Ingredients:

– one mason jar (or other jar with a wide mouth)

– powdered (colloidal) oatmeal

– dried lavender flowers

– lavender essential oil (optional)

Instructions:

Mix approximately 1 cup of powdered oatmeal with one teaspoon of dried lavender flowers.  Add a few drops of essential oil.  Shake the jar until ingredients are all mixed in together.

To use, fill a bath with warm water.  Add 2 tablespoons of the mixture to the bath.  Enjoy a relaxing and refreshing soak in the bath.

I want to make this. It sounds like it would be wonderful. I would definitely add the lavender. That’s what would make it special. This would be neat to make someone as a gift, even. Thanks for posting

I have yet to venture into using dried herbs vs essential oils in my baths. What a simple and great idea. I’m excited to try this my next bath night!

I’ve only recently been introduced to using oatmeal in a bath. It was because my son had a bad allergic reaction to antibiotics and was itchy. I was told to give him oatmeal baths. They really helped! Now I want to try an oatmeal lavender bath. It sounds divine!

I wish I had this years ago! I have eczema and this would have worked wonders! I tried other products that had oatmeal in it but it had other things too that were not pure. So I will have to share this with other people who have it and struggle with it. Awesome pictures too! Thanks for sharing!
